Have you ever wondered what women's circles are like? If you're feeling curious, you're not alone. Although there are many versions of these circles, they all aim to provide attendees with a safe space to explore their innermost selves. Women's circles are becoming increasingly popular in the modern world. But did you know they are an ancient tradition dating back thousands of years?

Women's circles are gatherings of women who come together to share, connect, and support each other. They are often based on the cycles of the moon and the seasons, reflecting the natural rhythms of nature and our own bodies. Women's circles can be a powerful way to celebrate the feminine, heal our wounds, and empower ourselves and each other.

But what exactly is a women's circle like, and where did this practice come from? How can it benefit you and your well-being? And how can you find a circle that suits your needs and preferences? In this blog post, I'll answer these questions and more. At the end, I'll invite you to participate in a survey to help me create the best women's circle for you.

The History of Women's Circles

According to some experts, humans have been gathering in circles for social interaction, storytelling, worship, and wisdom since we began walking upright. The fire was often in the circle's center, symbolizing the sacred source of life and energy.

Women's circles, in particular, have been an essential part of many ancient cultures and traditions. Women would gather in ceremonious circles based on the phases of the moon and their menstrual cycles, honoring their connection to nature and each other. These circles were considered very potent and healing, allowing women to tap into their intuition, creativity, and divine guidance. (Parkin, H. (2022, March 3). For example, some indigenous cultures and tribes would have moon lodges or red tents, where women would retreat during their bleeding time and share their visions and insights. A medicine woman often facilitated the circle and taught lessons on the stars and seasons.

Unfortunately, women's circles were also persecuted and outlawed in many societies throughout history. Women who practiced sacred ceremonies or connected to nature were accused of witchcraft and executed. Women's circles were seen as a threat to the patriarchal order and the dominant religions. As women, we are collectively still healing from the Witch Wound in our DNA

It wasn't until the mid to late 1900s that women's circles started to re-emerge in the West as part of the feminist movement and the revival of spirituality. And in the last decade, women's circles have become more mainstream and accessible, thanks to social media, online platforms, and wellness trends. Women everywhere are again awakening to the magic of gathering together in a circle to honor and support one another. We are remembering who we once were and stepping into our power together.

The Benefits of Women's Circles

So why are women's circles so appealing and beneficial today? Here are some of the reasons why you might want to join one:

  • Women's circles create a sense of community, communication, connection, and collaboration. They help us feel less isolated and more supported by our fellow sisters. They also foster a feeling of equality and respect among women from different backgrounds and experiences.
  • Women's circles provide a safe space for vulnerability, authenticity, and expression. They allow us to share our stories, emotions, challenges, and triumphs without judgment or criticism. They also encourage us to listen deeply and empathically to each other, creating a bond of trust and intimacy.
  • Women's circles promote healing, growth, and empowerment. They help us release stuck emotions and patterns that no longer serve us. They also inspire us to discover our gifts, passions, and purpose. They empower us to take action on our dreams and goals while supporting each other along the way.
  • Women's circles align us with nature and our own cycles. They help us tune into the phases of the moon and the seasons, as well as our menstrual cycles. They teach us to honor our natural rhythms and flow with them instead of trying to work against them. They also remind us of our connection to Mother Earth and all living beings.

How to Find Your Own Women's Circle

If you're intrigued by the idea of joining a women's circle, the first step is to decide whether you prefer online, in-person, or a combination of the two. Online circles are more convenient, especially if you live in a conservative or rural area with limited in-person options. On the other hand, in-person women's circles are often more potent, as you cannot overstate the power of the profound intimacy that comes with these experiences. If you can find one, a circle that offers the option of remote attendance if you cannot meet in person can be invaluable for providing the best of both worlds.

The next step is to decide what type of circle would suit you best. Do you desire an informal gathering focused on group conversation? A circle focused on the shared experience of healing from trauma? Or a more ritualistic event such as a moon circle with meditation, chanting, and intuitive dance?

Lastly, what size of circle are you looking for? Do you want a small group of regulars requiring regular participation that you can develop deep bonds with? Or an ever-evolving group of women with common interests who come and go as life allows? Are you seeking the expansion that a diverse group offers or connection with women of similar cultural and life experiences?

There are no wrong answers, just insights that can guide you in selecting the circle meant for you.
