Being a single mom is a full-time job, and it can be challenging to find a moment to breathe, let alone indulge in some much-needed relaxation. But, as a single mom, I guarantee you need a break. Even if you have no one to babysit the kids, you can make time to pamper yourself. This blog post will provide accessible and affordable ways to pamper your single mom self to help you unwind and recharge your batteries physically and mentally. So, please sit back, relax, grab your favorite cocktail or mocktail, and let me show you how to pamper yourself without spending a fortune.

Affordable Ways to Pamper Yourself

1. Soothe Your Skin With a DIY Facemask

The first step to creating a DIY spa day at home is to start with a simple, homemade face mask. I love this DIY honey oatmeal mask recipe I found on SomewhatSimple.com. All the ingredients are super soothing to the skin, and the honey has antibacterial properties, which can help with acne and supposedly also helps with anti-aging, a benefit I definitely don't mind.

Somewhat Simple's DIY Oatmeal Face Mask Ingredients

  • ½ cup oatmeal, uncooked
  • 1/4 to ½ cup water
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon pure honey

How To Make Somewhat Simple's Oatmeal Face Mask

  1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, cook oatmeal, water, milk, and honey for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring frequently with a spatula or spoon. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
  2. Massage a thick layer of plain honey all over your clean face and neck before applying the mask.
  3. Apply the mask to your face with upward strokes. Lie down and relax for 10 to 15 minutes. When it's time, remove and rinse using a soft facial wash cloth and warm water.

I love this one because if you have little kids around and they ingest some of it, it's entirely safe unless they are allergic to honey or milk. It's basically a very bland oatmeal cereal that's good for your skin.

If you search online for another face mask recipe, be cautious. Many of the ones that came up when I searched contain ingredients that can irritate the skin, such as lemon juice, apple cider vinegar (or any vinegar), and cinnamon. I suggest sticking with ingredients that are not acidic or irritating to the skin, such as the ones in this recipe. Other decent options are full-fat plain yogurt, aloe vera, and chamomile.

2. Soak in Some Suds

Since the goal is a DIY spa day, I recommend lying in a relaxing bath. Fill up your tub with warm water, add some bubbles or essential oils, and light some candles to set the mood. You can even put on some soothing music to help you unwind. Take your time and enjoy soaking in the tub, letting all your stress melt away. This can be an excellent opportunity to catch up on some reading or simply close your eyes and relax. I also like to listen to a guided meditation while I relax in the bath, especially one designed to connect me to my divine feminine or inner goddess.

If you have young children, you can soak in some suds during naptime so you know that the kiddos (and yourself) are safe while you relax. If you have a bathtub in the master bath and a TV or laptop in your bedroom, you can also have them camp out on the bed watching cartoons while you soak with the door open to monitor.

3. Stretch it Out

After your bath, wrap yourself in a cozy robe or wear your comfiest clothes and continue your self-care routine by stretching. Yin yoga postures can be especially beneficial. If you're unfamiliar with Yin yoga, it's essentially a deep stretching practice where you hold poses for several minutes each. This can assist with letting go of old emotions that are stored in your body.

For example, poses that stretch the hips help a lot if you have heavy emotions left over from a traumatic event that you were unable to process, as those often end up stored in your hips. Likewise, poses that stretch the neck and shoulders can be helpful if you often feel that the weight of the world sits on your shoulders because you're overburdened with responsibilities.

Going to an in-person yoga class is great and all, but with small kids or if you're on a tight budget, that can be hard to do. But yoga is super easy to do at home, especially with the countless videos available for free on YouTube. One of my favorites is Yoga with Adriene because she speaks to people at all levels of practice and has a fun, spunky attitude that makes me want to be her friend. You can also follow her here on Instagram.

I recommend wrapping up your DIY spa moment by simply enjoying a cup of tea. By taking time to focus on yourself, you'll be better equipped to handle the demands of single motherhood. Plus, this relaxing practice can set the tone for the rest of your day. After your at-home spa morning, the kiddos may need to let off some steam. So, next up, I suggest packing a simple picnic for a visit to the park and nature walk.

4. Plan a Picnic and Nature Walk

After a morning of relaxation, it's time to get outside and let the kids burn off some energy. This is a great opportunity to spend time with your children in nature while also taking some time for yourself to enjoy the fresh air and bask in the sun. After all, we are just complicated houseplants.

Pack your favorite snacks and drinks, and bring a comfortable blanket to sit on. Then, settle into a spot near the playground where you can keep the little ones in sight and let yourself unwind. This is a perfect opportunity to bond with your children and create lasting memories while tiring them out so they'll sleep better at night.

After taking a break and enjoying your picnic, take some time to enjoy a nature walk. This will allow you to soak up all the beauty surrounding you, which can be a peaceful and meditative experience that helps you reconnect with yourself and your surroundings. In addition, it is a great way to get some exercise and has a mood-boosting effect that can help you recharge for the rest of your day. Once you've taken in all the beauty nature has to offer, you can select some flicks for a movie marathon.

5. Have a Movie Marathon

Last on our list of affordable ways to pamper yourself as a single mom is to continue the relaxation with a movie marathon. Choose some of your favorite movies or opt for something new to watch. Grab some popcorn, put on your coziest pajamas, and settle in for a restful night in. This is a perfect way to end your day and fully unwind.

If you want to take your movie marathon to the next level, invite some friends over and make it a girls' and kids' night. You can all bring your favorite snacks and drinks and enjoy each other's company while watching your favorite movies.

But if you prefer some alone time, that's totally fine too. After all, authentic self-care is about doing what makes you happy. Once your movie marathon is over, get a good night's rest and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle whatever challenges come your way.
